L.E.A.D. Celebration of International Day of the Girl

Maddie Gibson

The Gwynedd Community enjoyed celebrating International Day of the Girl (October 11th) with a week of fun festivities. International Day of the Girl is a day of global focus, promoting the education of the girl. This day encourages girls around the world to feel empowered and inspired to have their voices heard. At Gwynedd, this year’s International Day of the Girl was sponsored by the L.E.A.D. (Learn, Educate, Achieve, Develop) Council. The Gwynedd Girls and school community were encouraged to change their social profile picture to the LEAD butterfly from October 8th to October 13th. The goal was to have one hundred percent participation from the student body, in order to advocate for the empowerment of girls. Additionally, students from L.E.A.D. and Mercy Effect spent the afternoon of Sunday the 11th decorating the school hallways with photos of inspiring quotes and images, symbolizing strength and empowerment of women. The hallways and ceilings were flooded with these photos that gathered the attention of students and sparked their curiosity about this day. Students from L.E.A.D. brought awareness to the challenges girls face regarding their human rights and education by sharing facts about these matters over the PA system during class changes. It was a successful day for our school and students, and we look forward to more International Day of the Girl celebrations in the future.
