Behind the Scenes of “Newsies the Musical”

Eleanor Jones

Newsies the Musical will be performed at Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School on November 10th, 11th, and 12th at 7:00 pm, along with November 13th at 2:00 pm. It follows newsboy, Jack Kelly, who dreams of a life as an artist away from the big city of New York. After the publisher Pulitzer raises newspaper prices at the newsboys’ expense, Kelly and his fellow newsies take action.

The set is built to resemble the period, with fire escapes, ladders, old buildings, and basements. The props were made from a mix of specially crafted and donations from the community. The Academy has had a newspaper donation bin since the beginning of October so the cast can easily reuse them for each performance.

Today, a preview of the show was held for the Gwynedd students and staff during community period. The songs “That’s Rich”, “Watch what happens”, and “King of New York” were performed by the cast. Tickets are selling fast! If you want to see fantastic songs and dance numbers over the weekend, support the Gwynedd Performing Arts and sellout these wonderful shows!
