Art Field Trip

On Friday, October 14, 2022, the students of Mrs. Hohenstein’s Honors and AP art classes took a field trip to the Rodin Museum in Philadelphia to study sculpture and art history. The girls started their day by meeting in the PAC lobby in preparation for the drive to Philly. All the girls were excited to get on the bus and start their adventure! On the bus ride down to the museum, Mrs. Hohenstein and the students talked about the art history of the Rodin Museum, the artist, Auguste Rodin, the creation of his pieces, and the museum itself. Once the classes arrived at the museum, they began the studies of the day! First the class took a trip around the Gardens of the museum, an outside area surrounding the museum that consists of a few of Rodin’s works and environmentally friendly greenery. Students were shown sculptures created by Rodin and learned about them through Mrs. Hohenstein’s wise, verbal introductions to each piece. Some pieces seen throughout the day included “The Thinker”, “The Burghers of Calais”, “The Cathedral”, “The Gates of Hell”, and “The Kiss”. The students then traveled inside for about an hour to take some time to look at some of Rodin’s works individually. When students finished discovering facts and exploring pieces from the museum, they began their creative writing and drawing exercises. The students were told to pick a sculpture in the museum that resonated with them and sketch it. Each student sat in front of their desired piece of study and began sketching away! The girls took a lunch break around 12:30 and afterward, they got to talk with the curator of the museum to learn some extra information about the exhibits displayed. Once the curator finished her simple, yet informative chat with the girls, the students were back to studying and recreating their chosen pieces of art. By the end of the day, girls had created masterpieces of their own in each person’s individual way. The students made their way back to the academy at 2:45, and the day had been an overall success enjoyed by all!
