Spring Sports Teams Prepare for a Great Season

Lauren Ryan

While the Gwynedd winter sports season goes on, the spring teams are starting to prepare for March 6th, the official PIAA spring start date. The 4 spring teams – crew, lacrosse, softball, and track – have each been working hard all winter in order to succeed in competition in the spring.

Crew has been practicing on the ergs, as well as doing running and core workouts. Their first 2K test of the winter is coming up, which will help determine preliminary boat placements for the spring. The rowers have said that working out together in the offseason increases team bonding and spirit. They look forward to flicks (small races) this spring, where they will see their hard work from winter pay off.

The lacrosse team is also preparing for their spring season with a variety of winter activities. The Magnet spoke to Colleen Mullin, a senior attacker who will play lacrosse at the University of Scranton, and she is excited to play for Gwynedd for the first time after being injured last year. Colleen and her teammates play in a winter league against other schools, practice together at the turf twice a week, and do speed training at Fast Twitch Training. Additionally, the lacrosse team welcomes a new head coach, which is exciting!

Gwynedd softball is working hard this offseason as well, with “once gyms” once a week. Some members of the team are also participating in conditioning training at Relentless Athletics. The athletes think that these practice opportunities will bring them closer to their teammates and coaches prior to the start of the season in March!

Lastly, the Track and Field team is ready for their season thanks to winter indoor track. Indoor track is a season of its own, but many of the athletes view it as preparation for the more competitive spring. Caitlin Scanlon, a sophomore shot-putter and javelin thrower, told the Magnet that she looks forward to being outside with the team, but she is enjoying the winter season in the meantime.

While GMA’s spring sports teams are busy getting ready for their season, the winter teams are still competing hard and always appreciate student support! Make sure to check the Gwynedd Athletics calendar for schedules for the rest of the winter season; spring schedules will be posted as they are finalized. Go Monarchs!
