Newsies Wrap Up!
November 30, 2022
“Where better to escape trouble than a theater?” -Medda Larkin, Newsies
What a headline! This past week, the Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School performing arts department presented the fall musical of Disney’s Newsies. The production ran four days in the Performing Arts Center of the school, and it completely sold out for three of the four. The shows on Thursday and Saturday starred the red cast, while the shows on Friday and Sunday starred the gold cast. The performances were absolutely breathtaking and featured talented singers and dancers from Gwynedd, LaSalle, Archbishop Wood, and St. Joseph’s Prep in the Broadway show’s hit songs such as “Carrying the Banner” and “King of New York.” The hardworking cast, directors, designers, crew, coaches, teachers, and pit musicians very much deserved the standing ovations and cheers that came from the delighted audiences. Not only did the performers in the cast work so greatly together on stage, but they also formed a close bond with one another behind the curtain. Katie Lynch ’25, who played the character of Davey in the gold cast, reflects on the incredible experience of Newsies by saying, “Playing Davey was the chance of a lifetime, but the best part of Newsies was the community. We all supported each other and helped each other grow. I would give anything for one last performance with them”. Gwynedd is extremely proud of the wonderful students involved in the performing arts program and the even more exciting events that await ahead. In the spring, many Gwynedd Mercy students will participate in the play Little Women, as well as Broadway Wishes to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
